ABSTRACT

[Abstract: One aspect of punctuation that is often overlooked is the occurrence of spaces and hyphens, especially in compounds (spellchecker, spell-checker, spell checker). These are not used, or are used differently, in other languages. However, they are an important factor in determining what a “word” is. As with other elements of punctuation, there is flexibility in the use of spaces and hyphens. Even dictionaries may disagree on whether words are solid, hyphenated or spaced.]
