ABSTRACT

[Abstract: Another feature of punctuation that may differ from learners’ native languages, and thus be a problem when learning English, is capital letters. A brief history of capital and lower-case letters is given, and the present-day rules generally followed for English capitalization are outlined. Capital letters are found in initialisms (e.g. IT) and acronyms (e.g. UNESCO), and the way in which original initials develop into regular words in the language (e.g. scuba) is explained.]
