ABSTRACT

[Abstract: The evolution from typewriters to computers brought with it other features designed to enhance the proofreading of word-processed text: spell checkers and auto-correct. The benefits and pitfalls of both are examined, in particular the claim that writers do not bother to learn correct spellings and proofread carefully because the computer will find errors. The spelling used by writers, not on computer-based word-processing but in SMS texts sent by smartphone, is also investigated, including the claim that texters cannot spell correctly and use SMS text language in inappropriate, more formal contexts.]
