ABSTRACT

This chapter explores communication in re-entry. Coming home from studying abroad provides students with both the opportunity and the challenge of articulating what their experience in the host culture means to them, and how or if they have changed. University students know something about the content of what some returnees include in their elevator speeches when communicating in re-entry. Researcher Yuliya Kartoshkina found an interesting way to describe re-entry from a phrase that several of the students who were part of her research used: bittersweet. Reflecting on university students verbal and nonverbal expressions can help them to manage and negotiate their re-entry, and process their study-abroad experiences. A student's sense of changed cultural identity, their preference for a new style of clothing or music, their use of a second language, their expression of emotion and sense of alienation, all of those are channeled through communication in re-entry.
