ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with the spatial dimension of both Caffa and the rest of the Genoese Gazaria, giving an overview of the whole Genoese domain and the relations between the centre and the periphery. The physical layout of the region in question (including the urban environment of Caffa) is an integral part of this study, alongside the topography and physical conditions of the colonies. Research into the urban and rural layout gives important evidence on the intensiveness of connections between the urban Italian settlements and their hinterland.
