ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on the importance of school connectedness for students with disabilities, and ways in which this sense of connectedness can be fostered are at the core of the discussion. It provides an in-depth look at each of these different types of interventions: family involvement, culturally responsive pedagogy, integrates community leaders into school life and bullying prevention, the research that supports their use and their effective implementation. The overall goal is to put forward an integrated and holistic approach to school connectedness. School connectedness incorporates additional social and emotional components related to overall student outcomes and is composed of four domains: school bonding, school attachment, school engagement and school climate. Scholars in the fields of psychology and educational psychology explored the concept of school connectedness.
