ABSTRACT

Differences between soft and loud sections propel the music forward. These dynamics provide tension, impact and release, reflection, melancholy or calm before the storm. It depends on the listening circumstances how big the differences between soft and loud can be. In a concert hall this dynamic range can be much greater than at home, because of less background noise and better isolation. Manipulating dynamics in a way that makes them seem big without them actually being big is key to getting a mix that is powerful and compelling no matter where you listen to it.
