ABSTRACT

Having designed the learning tasks, the next step is designing supportive information for carrying out those tasks. This chapter presents guidelines for this. It discusses the nature of general information about how to solve problems in the task domain (i.e., systematic approaches to problem solving—SAPs) and the organization of this domain. The chapter also describes the use of modeling examples to illustrate SAPs and of case studies to illustrate domain models. It discusses the use of deductive and inductive presentation strategies for combining general SAPs and domain models with specific modeling examples and case studies. The chapter further presents guidelines for providing cognitive feedback on the quality of nonrecurrent aspects of task performance. It discusses a suitable media for presenting supportive information, including multimedia, hypermedia, micro worlds, epistemic games and social media, and explains how supportive information is positioned in the training blueprint.
