ABSTRACT

The traditional use of the dictionary is found wanting and they can actually worsen vocabulary gaps in our classrooms if we don't pay close attention to their use. Independent word learning is vital, but sometimes children simply lack the requisite knowledge, so explicit vocabulary teaching is required to support word learning. Many schools deploy vocabulary books or similar, so that children can visibly grow their vocabulary and make a meaningful record of their learning. There are many variations on the theme of grouping and categorising words. Children with a wealth of words can seemingly do this 'naturally', but for children with a restricted academic vocabulary, it can prove more of a challenge that requires support and modelling. Crucially though, simply encouraging wider reading, or dressing up once a year to herald a 'reading day', won't close the vocabulary gaps in our classrooms.
