ABSTRACT

Teachers and student-teachers can and should become very efficient in using the wide breadth of multi-cultural education to add substance to the bare bones of all the attainment targets (AT) of the National Curriculum subjects. This chapter presents the AT of the core subjects of the National Curriculum, English, Mathematics and Science. AT1 requires children to be actively aware of accents, dialects and other languages. The multi-cultural material available to the children within the work provides a vast range of data which they can utilize to gain experience in ATs 1 and 9, Using and Applying Mathematics, the Number ATs 2–5, and the Data Handling ATs 12–14. Much of the material used in and generated by multi-cultural topics of all kinds will be suitable for investigating and recording by the methods mentioned in AT1, the Exploration of Science. Multi-cultural education is grounded in the similarities and variations within and between human lives.
