ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the skills required to present ourselves in friendly ways, and how to recognise friendly behaviours in others. The reason for teaching friendly behaviours is that human beings are wired to look for safe, welcoming connections. At home, parents also witness their children’s frail social skills in action, and it’s heart breaking. They watch their child happy, anticipating the arrival of a friend. A friendly face always has a smile. While eye-contact is important, be sure not to overstress it, so it becomes a stare or feels daunting. The Buzz is an opportunity for the group to play games that strengthen their relationship and the skills central to the lesson. The more group members are encouraged to play these, and similar games, the more opportunity they have to generalise their social thinking and skills into their day-to-day interactions.
