ABSTRACT
The name of Sharkiyah, to denote the suburb beyond the Basrah Gate, appears to have gone out of use during the course of the third century; probably because this same name Sharkiyah, meaning the Eastern Quarter, had come more and more to be used exclusively for East Baghdad, Kasross the Tigris, to which, after the return of the Caliphs from SaKasra, the seat of government had finally been transferred. The other quarter lying between the Basrah Gate and the Tigris is that of the Tustariyin, namely of the people of Tustar, otherwise called Shustar, the celebrated town in Khuzistan on the Karun River. The Baghdad quarter is so called, being inhabited by settlers from Khuzistan, who manufactured here the Tustari stuffs for which their native city is celebrated.
