Flow cytometry (FC) is very useful and is commonly applied in diagnostic hematology. Based on expression of numerous surface or cytoplasmic antigens, nuclear markers (e.g., TdT, CD1a), side light scatter (SSC), and forward light scatter (FSC), FC allows for identication and subclassication of numerous hematopoietic tumors, especially acute leukemias and lymphomas. FC analysis is fast and sensitive, allowing for identication of rare events with aberrant, well-dened phenotypes within minutes, thus providing an excellent tool not only for diagnosis, but also for disease monitoring (minimal residual disease, MRD).
