ABSTRACT

‘Chapter 7: Development’ extends discussions of generic transformations from youth film to road movie. Notions of development figure alongside world-system negotiations of sociocultural ‘developmentalism’ and political economy at the same time they reconfigure identity building processes and existential concerns. Most apparent through road travel and material-immaterial concerns, diegetic information throughout the film ironically linearizes some of this in causality and related actions, at the same time, through the film’s complex forms, it prioritizes delays, repetition, cycles, and stop-start stutters.
