ABSTRACT

Hegel, in his philosophy of history, finds in all evolution the development of the idea of freedom. There seem to have been five creative epochs, five movements or achievements of the human spirit. These were: the flowering of the Greek mind in free thought and life; the achievement of Hebrew spirit in the moral and spiritual interpretation of life; the development of Roman law, order and organization; the Scientific movement in its growing understanding of the laws of nature and the mastery of man's environment by the machine in material production to supply human need; and, finally, the Social movement with its ideal of equal justice for all realized in the socialization of all life. If it is true that in capitalism and Communism people now have in the world two contrasted and challenging social orders, it ought to give them a valuable point of reference for the evaluation and criticism of each system from the standpoint of the other.
