ABSTRACT

This exercise is to enable participants to focus on and celebrate what they like about themselves. Giving thought time to this can be all too infrequent, often because of childhood messages about not being self-centred or arrogant or boastful. Yet self-worth is a key part of resilience. People who have had too little encouragement in their lives and too much discouragement may find the exercise challenging. If so, they will need your support to talk about times they were proud of themselves or really helped someone or were successful at something or dared to try something new. You know you have gotten through if they light up when telling you about something. Please note: The exercise is not suitable for people with chronically low self-esteem as it may be very painful for them if they cannot think of anything to put in their gallery.
