ABSTRACT

You may know a lot by virtue of your experiences as a helper. You may have a very good idea of what helps a stubborn girl who isn’t eating, anxious clients with a fear of flying, or clients in early recovery from an addiction. You may have a practiced way of sitting calmly, leaning forward, and listening that helps clients share what’s troubling them. You may know a lot about the rhythms of working with human beings, a lot about using a particular method, or a lot about understanding a certain issue. Nevertheless, when it comes to helping with human issues like despair, anxiety, meaninglessness, and so on, we can never know another human being well enough to do what in medicine is done every single day.
