ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the sustainable engineering product design, its key requirements, and the important role of engineering in sustainable development. It explores the transition path from typical design into sustainable design. The chapter briefly describes the steps for sustainable engineering design process. It examines measuring success tools including triple bottom line and quality design, and the various aspects of design for sustainability. The chapter shows how green products are result of integrating sustainable manufacturing and clean technologies. It also discusses the various assessment methods and tools for environmental and sustainability performance including life cycle thinking, carbon footprint and water footprint, life cycle assessment, and life cycle sustainability analysis. The chapter explains the concept of closed-cycle manufacturing, and the drivers and challenges for product remanufacturing. It provides a case activity how to incorporate life cycle sustainability and energy analysis in product remanufacturing process.
