ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on design theory or design science and provides a historical perspective of engineering design. It explores engineering design and its relation to innovation and entrepreneurship, types of design and the importance of engineering design. The chapter also explores the philosophy of design and its transdisciplinary factor. It describes factors such as human, technical, and environmental that influence design including design purpose and setting. The chapter examines the concepts of systems engineering, concurrent engineering and V-design approach in project life cycle development. It explains different systematic design models and highlights the scope of human factors engineering. The chapter shows that the impact of habits of mind in modern engineering design and discusses the role and impact of design in engineering education. Design thinking is a methodology used by designers to solve complex problems, and find desirable solutions for clients.
