ABSTRACT
Chapter 6 addresses logistics (activities and resources) for the elements of evacuation that take place between the time that people leave their homes and the time they arrive at their evacuation destinations. These logistics include the selection of accommodations, destinations, travel modes, routes, and travel times. Most evacuees stay in one of three types of accommodations—peers’ (friends’ or relatives’) homes, commercial facilities (hotels or motels), or public shelters; peers’ homes host the majority of evacuees. Evacuees’ destinations and distances traveled have shown substantial variation. Personal vehicles are the overwhelming preference for evacuees in the US. The factors influencing drivers’ route choices include anticipated travel times, congestion, familiarity with the route, and experience. Driver behavior, and the myth of panic, is also discussed.
