ABSTRACT

An emerging area that has seen significant and rapid improvements in both theory and practice has been in modeling and simulation of evacuation traffic. While both the number of programs that are being used and the amount of people using them has been a positive development for evacuation planning, the selection of any particular system for a specific location and hazard can be difficult. Chapter 9 presents the range of traffic simulation platforms and levels of analysis as well as techniques for modeling evacuation strategies. Elements of simulation scenarios and the need for multiple scenarios for evacuation planning are also discussed. The scenarios should be logical. While it may be academically interesting and informative to understand worst of the worst situations, practitioners and decision-makers are interested in obtaining reasonable values on which to base evacuation notice timing decisions.
