ABSTRACT

On 27 January 1943 Hitler permitted Fritz Sauckel, Plenipotentiary-General for Mobilisation, to issue a decree by which all women between the ages of 17 and 45 had to register for work, but the impact of this decree was undermined by both the reluctance of many women, who had hitherto escaped war work, to register and the fact that employers found foreign labour much more effective. The following is an extract from an SD (Security Service) report of 4 February 1943.
