ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author explains while much of this book is aimed at understanding changes at the organizational level. She proposes several different models that are better aligned for the higher education sector, such as learning communities, networks, and communities of practice, as ways to scale up changes that have proven successful in the past. The author explores research in higher education related to extending changes across higher education. Higher education operates as a decentralized system, so change tends to happen more at the institutional and state levels The author highlights two areas of literature that have been used in higher education to scale-up change— social movements and networks. The research that exists on social movements within the academy suggests these efforts have been successful in creating significant and scaled-up changes. The author also highlights social movements, networks, and communities of practice address many of the critiques raised over traditional scale-up models.
