ABSTRACT

This chapter examines why leaders need to engage with the change process, as well as the particular challenges face in this era. It suggests that the context for change is shaping the way change can and does occur— the nature of change processes is itself being altered. Change agents also need to be more accountable and transparent as there is less trust in higher education as a sector. The chapter helps leaders frame the way they think about the vision and direction for their institutions in this new era. Leaders can work toward changes that may be more difficult to achieve in this environment and actually cost money to implement, but also improve the quality of instruction or student experience, while also helping to meet the broader mission of higher education. Sometimes change agents are creating changes that are of their own making— implementing a strategic plan, rethinking the curriculum, or implementing a new program.
