ABSTRACT

A very considerable number of dramas have survived from the first half of the 16th century, either printed or manuscript, separate or in collections, and new ones are constantly coming to light. As plays increased in number, divergent paths were explored; dramatic art was in search of its true way. Torres Naharro exerted a powerful influence on Spanish drama. It can be noted in many of his contemporaries who may be regarded as in greater or less degree his disciples or imitators. The long period which now opens before us covers and runs somewhat beyond the reigns of the son and grandson of Charles V. This period is long, including nearly a century. But there seems to be no advantage in subdividing it; quite the contrary, for it has its unity, which had best not be chopped up needlessly.
