ABSTRACT

Florian de Ocampo had attempted to give Spain a complete and authentic history, in place of chronicles which had till then satisfied her. He failed in his undertaking. The Aragonese Jeronimo Zurita was less ambitious: he limited his endeavor to Aragon. The prose of that period may be divided into three main categories: history, mystical and didactic writings, and novel. The Cordovan Ambrosio de Morales, was professor of rhetoric at Alcala, and chronicler of Castile. Mariana's History embraces world-events from most ancient and fabulous, in time of Japhet, down to the Emperor Charles V. A very different type of work is the Guerra de Granada of Diego Hurtado de Mendoza, who was exceptionally well placed to know the facts of the uprising of the Moriscos in 1568–1571. The Guerra de Granada is one of the most vaunted monuments of classic Spanish prose, yet one may be allowed to say that effort and method are at times too much in evidence.
