ABSTRACT

Our house was already built, the vineyards planted, the last comers to the colony were preparing to plough, and all this while the synagogue was simply a large room with a bench, and a cupboard containing a plain printed scroll of the Law. So my parents, who were anxious to make a thank-offering for what they had been able to accomplish, decided to go to Jerusalem, and to have a manuscript scroll written out for our synagogue, after which the room was to be adorned in befitting style. The men caught at the idea and offered to make more benches and to whitewash the walls. The women came together and discussed mantles for the Scroll and the curtain to be hung in front of the ark.
