ABSTRACT
This chapter describes how the team can ensure that their strategies will be relevant to the needs of their organization, then how to enhance the diversity and variety of their strategies. It discusses a number of strategies. What the team has been doing, in the data collection stages, is to build up an overall picture of the company within its long-term environment. It is important for the team to remember why they are being asked to expand their list of strategic ideas: in a very short time they are going to have to make a number of decisions which may determine the course of their company for many years into the future. The chapter aims to widen the definition of one's business activity. It is important to note the status accorded to this 'What business are we in?' question. In some textbooks it has been promoted to a method for deciding diversification.
