ABSTRACT

In most African races, a suspicion of witchcraft will at once be aroused, and it is the same with many of the Australian aborigines, Papuans, and so on. On the coast of Alaska, where the observance of totemistic exogamy was no longer strictly practised, and where it was now permissible to take a wife from one's own clan, the older people used to consider this promiscuity responsible for the great mortality of the Kenayer tribe. In the east of Greenland, if a tent is not provided with a new skin covering in spring, crested seals and Greenland seals must not be taken into it till after a lapse of some days. If an accident in itself is not a sufficiently clear revelation, that is if the native does not know beforehand that when a certain accident happens a certain violation has been committed, one will have recourse, according to the circumstances, to dreams, ordeals, invocation of spirits.
