ABSTRACT

The key skill of contacting the present moment is “mindfulness” – “being aware of the present moment, in a way that is conscious, curious and flexible”. It is worth explaining to clients the pragmatic intent behind this – simply to be more fully in the here and now, in order to be more engaged with life. This chapter describes how to practically introduce a client to this in session using a mindful breathing exercise, as well as how to debrief such an exercise in a way that reinforces the intention of mindfulness practice. It is important to emphasise that contacting the present moment isn’t just about being more effective – it is also about living fully and bringing richness to experience.
