ABSTRACT

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy is undergirded by an explicitly stated philosophy of science; functional contextualism. Functional contextualism, being a philosophy of science, and ACT being a science, uses it as its foundation for all subsequent endeavours. At its heart, it takes a pragmatic position to state that that which is known or true are those things that work. Workability is specifically defined within this psychological framework as processes that move the person, team or organisation towards a predefined set of values. The chapter explores these concepts and makes the case for the direct relevance these principles have for coaching sessions.
