C a s t l e r e a g h was absorbed in the w ork o f the Foreign Office from January 1812 until the end o f 1813; he was on the Continent from the beginning o f January 1814 until after the signature o f the First Treaty o f Paris (30 May 1814); he w ent to Vienna in September 1814, and remained there until February 15 18x5, when, at the urgent entreaty o f his colleagues, he left for England. He reached England on March 3rd and was in his place in Parliament, again crossing swords w ith Samuel W hitbread, on March 6th. After W aterloo he again w ent to Paris, and did no t finally return to England until after the signature o f the Second Treaty o f Paris and the renewal o f the Quadruple Alliance (20 Novem ber 1813).
