ABSTRACT

The entrance of the United States of America into the World-War in 1917 was acclaimed as the opening of a new chapter in world-history. In 1917, the United States of America took their place side by side with great European Powers in a conflict which on a superficial view was primarily European. The war between Spain and the United States was not, however, confined to the Atlantic. An American squadron under the command of Admiral Dewey appeared before Manila, forced an entrance into the ill-defended harbour, and in two hours destroyed the entire Spanish Fleet. The Spanish-American War unquestionably gave an immense impulse to, if it did not actually initiate, a new movement in American history. By far the most significant result of the Spanish-American War was the establishment for the first time of really cordial relations between the United States and Great Britain.
