ABSTRACT

Mobile Multimedia in Action is based on a series of studies conducted in Helsinki, Finland, between 1999 and 2002. More specifically, two studies have provided data for it: Mobile Image and Radiolinja, both of which were conducted at the University of Art and Design Helsinki. Most studies of mobile multimedia—or camera phones—carried out by social scientists rely on traditional methods of social science, including observation, interviewing, and analysis of actual images in people's phones. Telephone service was provided by Radiolinja, a Helsinki-based mobile operator. The Radiolinja multimedia messaging service Study was done with industrial designers Esko Kurvinen and Katja Battarbee and several assistants. Mobile Image was treated as a pilot study in which a set of hypotheses was created in order to analyze the data from Radiolinja. Thus far, the Radiolinja project has produced about thirty scientific publications, and the company's only corrections have been on purely technical details.
