ABSTRACT

Sound, can be used to capture ideas, intentions, rational trains of thought, and other forms of everyday impressions. In sending greetings, news, questions and sometimes humor, sound often works better than text in Short Message Service or "voiceless" Multimedia Messaging Service. There are two types of audible sound in messages: foreground" sounds; and ambient" sounds. Depending on how sound develops, action is available from ambient sound in many ways. The soundscape in mobile multimedia is considerably more complex than the foreground. Sound files take the recipients beyond the visual: they give them access to several things that are unavailable in pictures and text. This Chapter focuses on one aspect of the "hip top" multimedia environment: the uses of audio capacity. The focus has been first on how people use sound in the foreground of the message and second on how they use ambient sound. Audio capability is a significant addition to the methodic repertoire of people using mobile multimedia.
