ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses novelty of multimedia messaging, namely how people use the body in designing messages. Faces and other body parts are ubiquitous in multimedia messages, and are used in several ways in communication. At the more minimal end, bodies appear in multimedia messages as a scenic feature in the background of a message. People use their bodies in many ways to enhance or augment messages with conventional gestures. Faces and their parts were pictured to express feelings such as being sorry and missing the loved one, too. Still, faces do more than communicate emotions and moods. Thus, messages with faces are responded to with faces, as are torsos with torsos, gestures with gestures, and body parts with similar body parts. The Chapter describes various ways in which gestures, faces, and bodies are used as communicative resources in mobile multimedia messages.
