ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the main types of responses and relates them to the preceding messages. It shows how mobile multimedia messages create a situation in which the recipient must not only analyzes the message, but must also thinks about whether a reply is needed. The chapter also shows that when they receive messages, people get engaged in many kinds of activities. Sometimes responses build on the fact that the earlier message was somehow outrageous distasteful, or raunchy. Most novelties in mobile multimedia messaging are based on modifying gestalt contextures. In mobile multimedia, recipients typically "respect" the instructions they receive from the sender. The case of replies is simpler in terms of interaction: not responding to, say, a question would be noticeable, and would even be seen as offensive behavior. In comparative terms, multimedia messages seldom lead to long exchanges in the same manner as text messages.
