ABSTRACT

The real politics: for when a man parades a mask he is attempting to take control by imposing on others his definition of the nature of men and the social world in which they live; that definition is condensed in the expression on the mask. This chapter explores ten masks. A mask invites the audience to accept the wearer's definition of the nature of men and the social world in which they live. These portraits display a variety of features, which can be used to point up differences and similarities between them. They contain statements about human nature, and about institutional arrangements, the degree of specificity varying from case to case. The chapter describes certain features which are left obscured by the chart. These, together with the features which were used to give shape to the chart, will be considered again after other variables which concern who may wear what mask and in what situations, have been taken into account.
