ABSTRACT

This is a book about people at work. A demonstration of the relationship between measures of attitudes and resulting behavior is of the first importance. Industry wants to know whether the worker's attitude toward his job makes any difference in the way he works or in his willingness to stick with it. A major failing of most previous work in job attitudes has been its fragmentary nature. There are two possible approaches to the study of this complex. The first of these starts from the premise that it is possible to set up large groups that differ significantly with respect to some specific variable or group of variables. The second basic approach, the individual or idiographic, starts with the premise that the relationship among the components of the factors-attitudes-effects complex should be studied within individuals. The areas of study encompassed by "job attitudes" has certain well-defined characteristics. The measurement of job attitudes has been developed and applied extensively.
