ABSTRACT

The analysis of effects was relatively simple, since most effects were specified by the respondent in concrete terms. The major-effect categories include most of the criterion measures which have been studied in the literature of industrial psychology, as well as some other criteria which have not been so clearly defined in the past. The effect of job situations on the mental health of the respondents was evident in many of our interviews. There were some positive effects. These included statements of improvement in tension symptoms, of gaining weight when underweight, and of a cessation of such harmful activities as excessive drinking and smoking. There were many reports of situations in which a person's feelings about his job led to changed attitudes towards himself, his colleagues, his profession, or the company for which he worked. Both positive and negative statements of this kind were worthy of identification and analysis.
