ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a perspective on the patterns of Jasper agrarian life, and their relationships to the natural environment of the region, with emphasis on the styles of life of the majority population of the Jasper region: the ranching and farming communities. It begins with a review of the relationships between the significant geographical areas of the region, economies, and cultural styles, and continues with descriptions of life in town and country, festivals and ceremonials of regional significance, and attitudes toward nature and animals. The cultural patterns of the Indians and the Hutterites are described in Chapters 5 and 8, and additional details on ranching and farming styles of life are provided in Chapters 6 and 7.
