ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses adolescents’ development with an in-depth look at the parent-child relationship. It investigates parent/caretaker and adolescent reports on the parenting measures. The chapter describes parent/caretaker and adolescent reports on levels of neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse of the adolescents by adult caretakers and explores them to findings for other samples of homeless and runaway youth and adolescents in the general population. The chapter presents reports from caretakers regarding violence directed toward them by the adolescents. The parents/caretakers of the adolescents and the adolescents themselves were asked to complete three basic parenting scales that assessed parental warmth and supportiveness, parental monitoring, and parental rejection. Twenty-four percent of young women and 9% of the young men told that an adult caretaker had made a verbal request for sexual activity prior to the time that they ran away from home.
