ABSTRACT

In the United Kingdom, the Nursing Research Fellowship Training Scheme was born, and nursing education began to penetrate university structures at various levels. As in the United States, this was important to the growth of a research infrastructure. The pioneers of European nursing research were instrumental in the establishment of an expert committee on the subject. In the United States, the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education released the first official document related to nursing research priorities. Major commitments have been undertaken by a variety of entities on behalf of health care and nursing research. Many governmental funding sources, some or many of which are not dedicated specifically to the nursing inquiry, depending on the situation, are open to all nurses. Society is generally excluded from the sharing of information related to nursing research and its knowledge base. Nursing research is vital to the reinforcement of the profession's quest for excellence in many sectors.
