ABSTRACT

Many scientific and technological developments have far-reaching consequences for certain occupations. The culture of science and technology is dominant in contemporary America. Science is a social activity directed toward understanding nature, man, and society. In the physical and biological sciences, professors who specialize in a particular subdivision of a discipline usually accept a common paradigm. In the United States, self-taught Benjamin Franklin was one of the first scientists. American universities did not pay much attention to science until after the establishment of the Land Grant Colleges in 1862. There are still many individual owner-entrepreneurs on the scene but American industry and business is dominated by great corporations. In 1907 the radio tube was invented by Lee De Forest, an American. Although photographs were transmitted by wire between London and Paris in 1907, the first television camera was not patented until 1938, and television was not developed commercially until 1947.
