ABSTRACT
The end of the preceding chapter highlighted some dilemmas of participant observation resulting from the identity conflicts of the sociologist in the field. In Chapters Six and Seven I present a final, contrasting project in which I resolved the dilemmas and thereby strengthened my identification with the discipline. The meshing of person, problem, and method produces these dilem mas, which arise with all methods.
