ABSTRACT

Hull House was started in April, 1889. Three years later a great massacre occurred at Kirschnereff, Russia. A large number of Russians of Jewish origins came to this country, and hundreds and hundreds of them settled in the neighborhood of our House. The parents sing the songs at home until the children get them pretty well, and then they are practiced in the music room. The teaching of languages, especially in settlements, ought to be kept socialized. Learning a foreign language is often a very dreary process. In the music school we have made an effort to have the children sing the songs that their parents brought with them from their own countries. In the beginning at Hull House we were surrounded by a great many Italians. Those were the days when unified Italy was comparatively new and many of the Italians in our neighborhood had taken part in the great movement for unification.
