ABSTRACT

In the mid-1970s I spent several weeks at a summer session of the German language school in the university in Freiburg-imBreisgau – brushing up my German, for research in Vienna. I boarded at the home of a retired professor and his wife. The spare bedroom, which I was given, had photographs of Norwegian landscapes, and during dinner I thanked my hosts for making me feel at home, thinking that they had obtained the pictures for my benefit. Oh no! He had taken them himself when he and his wife were stationed in Oslo during the occupation of Norway in the Second World War.
