ABSTRACT

In 1927, partly to improve his financial condition and partly to broaden his scientific contacts, Schumpeter went to Harvard University to teach for the academic year. The visit indeed accomplished those goals and, in addition, helped bring him out of the depression in which he had plunged following the death of his wife and mother. He renewed his interest in scientific work and accomplished a great deal of research and writing. He enjoyed thoroughly the environment of Harvard, which he found invigorating. The large number of bright and promising graduate students impressed and simulated him most. He returned to Bonn refreshed.
