ABSTRACT

The current preoccupation with the Euro and the future of a united Europe, the fears of a global recession, and the possible consequences of the conflicts in the Arab world and Iran have largely overshadowed the emergence of another global crisis: The revolt of the young generation, which could have equally wide repercussions. The youth unemployment have political consequences seems fairly certain, even though it cannot be predicted whether the extreme left or the far right will benefit more. The indignados movement in Spain was one of the precursors of political protest, and the "occupy" movement was and is to a large extent a phenomenon generated by youth unemployment. So far, political radicalization has not been a notable success—this goes for the various "Occupy" initiatives, the Arab spring, and similar such movements.
