ABSTRACT

The Wandervogel and its successor groups were an elite movement of young people who wanted to be among contemporaries, not supervised and led by adults. There were some girls and young women among those who came to the Hohe Meissner in 1913, but they were inconspicuous, except perhaps at the time of dancing, which was part of the program; not one of the many speeches made at the occasion was held by a female member of the Wandervogel, which was essentially a male creation for males. A project sponsored by the Shell company has investigated for many years the mood and desires of the young generation in Germany. It seems premature to write off the spirit of rebellion among young Germans. The young people of today will have to carry a heavy burden connected with various debts and obligations incurred by earlier generations.
